Boston Red Sox outfielder Wilyer Abreu is one of 14 players on the team slated to compete in the 2026 World Baseball Classic.
Before that, Abreu and his Boston teammates will play their first Spring Training game of the year when they face Northeastern on Friday afternoon in an exhibition contest.
Red Sox insider Mac Cerullo of the Boston Herald included Abreu among a trio of standouts through the early days of spring workouts.
"If there’s one player on the roster who looks primed to take a big step forward it’s Wilyer Abreu," Cerullo wrote. "Having won back-to-back Gold Gloves at right field in his first two seasons as a big league regular, Abreu is expected to get everyday at bats despite the club’s crowded outfield picture. Manager Alex Cora has frequently expressed his desire for Abreu to get regular opportunities against left-handed pitching, so if he can stay healthy, Abreu should be well positioned to exceed his career highs of 132 games and 447 plate appearances."
The 26-year-old will suit up for his native Venezuela during the international tournament in March.
Abreu finished the 2025 season with career highs in home runs (22) and RBIs (69) while posting a .247/.317/.469 slash line across 417 plate appearances covering 115 games.
