The New England Patriots had contracts for eight players expire, including veteran wide receiver Trent Sherfield Sr.
Sherfield did not appear in a game for the Patriots. He was signed to the practice squad on Jan. 13 originally, but was released on Jan. 24. He was re-signed on Jan. 28, but the Patriots did not sign him to a futures contract. He will be a free agent when free agency opens in March.
Sherfield has played eight seasons in the NFL and was a candidate to be elevated if the Patriots dealt with some injuries at some point late in the season. He appeared in games for the Denver Broncos and the Arizona Cardinals last season.
He signed with the Broncos before the season. He played in 10 games, starting three, and caught three passes for 21 yards. Denver released him in November, and the Cardinals signed him in December. He played two games for the Cardinals and was released. He had jst one target for the Cardinals last season.
Sherfield has played in 124 games with 14 starts and has 89 receptions for 1,034 yards. He has scored six touchdowns in his career. His best season came with the Miami Dolphins in 2022, when he recorded 30 receptions for 417 yards. He has also appeared in seven playoff games, logging three catches for 15 yards.
He has played for six teams in the NFL, originally signing with the Cardinals as a free agent out of college. He has spent time with the Cardinals, Broncos, Miami Dolphins, Buffalo Bills, Minnesota Vikings and San Francisco 49ers in his career.
