Triston Casas Gives Reason For Wearing Mask At Red Sox Spring Training

Boston Red Sox first baseman Triston Casas has been sporting a full mask at spring training, and we now (possibly) know the reasoning.

Triston Casas' reasoning for wearing a full mask at spring training is quite simple: He doesn't want to be chilly.

Whether that's actually the reason, Casas, as he's known to do, turned heads at the start of camp by covering up just about everything but his eyes with a red, skin-tight mask.

Obviously, such accessories aren't typically seen in Grapefruit and Cactus League action, since the point is to train in a comfortable environment in February when things are a little less pleasant in, say, Boston.

Casas told Rob Bradford on Audacy's Baseball Isn't Boring podcast the reasoning behind the mask.

"I'm just cold. It's what, 75 out there?" Casas, a Florida native, said. "I'm not used to that in Miami."

If that is indeed the case, suffice it to say Casas will be bundled up when the Red Sox open at Fenway Park on April 3.

Dress aside, this is a big year for Casas. Once the organization's top prospect, he's shown flashes of his potential, but injuries and inconsistency have impacted his big league run thus far. He ultimately played in just 29 games in 2025, posting a .182 batting average and .580 OPS.

With Willson Contreras now in the fold, Casas does have added heat for first base playing time. While Contreras should see plenty of time as a designated hitter, Casas' spring could play a role in exactly how Boston needs to utilize Contreras in 2026.
