The Kansas City Chiefs took a significant step to create breathing room under the salary cap this week by restructuring quarterback Patrick Mahomes’ deal.

Per ESPN's Adam Schefter, the team converted $54.45 million of Mahomes’ 2026 salary into a signing bonus. The move drops his 2026 cap hit from $78.2 million to $34.65 million, freeing up $43.56 in space. Even after the adjustment, Kansas City remains approximately $11 million over the cap, but the maneuver provides crucial flexibility as free agency approaches.

The restructuring comes at a pivotal time for the Chiefs, who look to retain core pieces and address roster needs following the 2025 campaign. This financial tweak ensures the organization can operate with greater maneuverability without disrupting Patrick's long-term presence.

In 14 starts during the 2025 regular season, Mahomes completed 315 of 502 passes for 3,587 yards, 22 touchdowns and 11 interceptions, good for a 62.7 completion percent and 89.6 passer rating. He added 422 rushing yards and five rushing touchdowns on 64 carries.

While the numbers reflect continued production, the Chiefs encountered inconsistency, with Mahomes showing flashes of brilliance alongside occasional turnover issues in losses. His ability to extend plays and lead game-winning drives remained evident, solidifying his status as one of the league’s premier quarterbacks even as the team navigated a challenging year.

Mahomes is expected to miss approximately nine to 12 months following surgery in December 2025 to repair a torn ACL and LCL.
