Boston Red Sox manager Alex Cora believes veteran right-hander Sonny Gray can make an immediate difference for Brayan Bello in a mentor role.
“He’ll have a lot of influence on Bello," Cora said on Tuesday, per Tyler Milliken of 98.5 The Sports Hub. "Very similar as far as the repertoire. I think Bello throws harder, but we introduced a curveball to Brayan; hopefully Sonny can help him out with that.”
Gray joined the Red Sox via trade from the St. Louis Cardinals in the offseason on a short-term deal. The 36-year-old brings a polished mix of pitches and a reputation for helping younger arms. As Cora noted, Gray's repertoire lines up closely with Bello’s, giving the 26-year-old a natural mentor as camp ramps up in Fort Myers.
Bello is reportedly unveiling the new curveball in live batting practice sessions this week. Cora’s staff introduced the pitch late last season, and Gray’s input on grip, shape, and sequencing could sharpen it quickly.
The Red Sox rotation now sits among the deepest in the AL East with Garrett Crochet, Ranger Suarez, Gray, and Bello at the front. Early work between the two right-handers fits the bigger picture of building comfort and versatility before exhibition games begin later this month.
Fans will get their first extended look at the duo when the full roster reports and Grapefruit League play starts. Any progress on Bello’s breaking ball could pay dividends all season long as Boston pushes for a return to October.
