Boston Red Sox utility player Kristian Campbell is blown away by Sonny Gray.
The Red Sox acquired Gray this offseason to bolster their rotation and add another veteran leader to the team. Gray is expected to be a key part of Boston’s rotation, and although he has yet to pitch in a game, he has been getting in work at the facility.
Gray pitched a two-inning session of live batting practice on Sunday morning and one of the hitters he faced was Campbell. After the outing, Campbell admitted he was blown away by Gray.
"The way he spins it is crazy,” Campbell said, via MLB.com. “That’s my first time I’ve ever seen it. I’ve heard about it, but it’s different when you’re in the box. I’ve seen sweepers that are slow and just kind of get over. His was quick, and it moved a lot.”
Gray is coming off a year where he recorded 14-8 with a 4.28 ERA in 32 starts last season, and if he can improve on that, he’ll be an impact pitcher for the Red Sox this season. The veteran is likely the team’s No. 3 or No. 4 starter behind Garrett Crochet, Ranger Suarez, and possibly Brayan Bello.
As for Campbell, he’s looking to earn a spot on the roster after being demoted to Triple-A in June.
Boston will open its 2026 MLB season on March 26 on the road against the Cincinnati Reds.
